Dispelling 5 Myths About Ceramic Coatings

With the plethora of paint protection and ceramic coatings out on the market today, it’s tempting to wonder if they live up to their claims. Is the way they’re described accurate? Are you getting your money’s worth? There are plenty of factors to consider before you decide to have one applied for the exterior protection of your vehicle.

We’d like to bust 5 common myths about ceramic coatings so you know exactly what you’re getting when you purchase this service.

Myth #1: A Ceramic Coating Means My Vehicle Is Chip Resistant

Unfortunately, this is not the case! We want you to have a realistic expectation of what these products can actually do for your vehicle. While they do protect the paint job from scratches and circular swirl marks that can pop up, they cannot protect against chips from those small rocks that hit your vehicle.

Myth #2: Your Vehicle Is ‘Scratch-Proof’ After a Ceramic Coating

For your ceramic coating to hold up, it’s important that you clean your vehicle correctly. If you’re washing your vehicle from a single bucket, using a circular motion, that’s how scratches and swirl marks happen.

Instead, you should use the two-bucket method, where you rinse your washing mitt or cloth in a separate bucket from your clean water. It keeps all the dirt and grime that can scratch your coating in one rinse bucket. It’s also recommended to wash the car in an up and down or side to side motion, not in a circular motion.

Myth #3: Ceramic Coatings Don’t Need to Be Applied to New Vehicles

The opposite is true! The best time to apply a ceramic coating is when the vehicle is brand new. This ensures that you keep the paint job looking great from the start and prevent scratches that will need to be buffed out. If you keep up a proper washing, ceramic coating, and waxing routine, your vehicle will look like it was just driven off the lot for years!

Myth #4: Ceramic Coatings Have Warranties and “Will Last for ‘X’ Number Years” Guarantee

If you drive your car 365 days a year, come rain, shine, sleet, or snow, then the ceramic coating will indeed take some wear and tear from UV rays and other environmental contaminants.

If a coating comes with a warranty, you will have to continue to wash the vehicle correctly and still have to re-apply at the recommended intervals to keep up the shine and protection.

Myth #5: Ceramic Coatings Are Just a Money-maker for Detailers & Body Shops

It’s true: some brands can make inflated claims about the exact benefits of the chemical makeup of the product. For example, the idea that coatings are “fire-proof” is false, and the “buzz” over titanium-matrix products as the “best” coating products actually comes down to marketing speak intended to make them seem harder and more durable.

However, components such as siloxane, silazane, silicon carbide, silane, silica, and graphene are based on science and chemistry so they provide the shininess and hardness that make a product with actual, tangible benefits for external protection.
